This little gem, tucked away in an old building on Beatty St, has an unassuming exterior, but is always bustling inside. Something about the name piqued our interest, and perhaps the restaurant’s Belgian culinary theme appealed to my inner ¼ Walloon. We were not disappointed.

The décor of this young restaurant is modern industrial taken to a decidedly chic, polished level. It is somewhat busy, and very hip. There is a small lounge near the front – space is at a premium here- followed by a bar well stocked with Belgian beer selections, then a corridor to the rear dining area, which involves an opening into the kitchen to let guests see the chef at work. The main dining area is not very big, but features high ceilings and a large window with a view of GM place. The feel is very fresh and open, despite the closeness of tables to one another. One drawback is that the high ceilings allow for echoes, making things a little loud. This is a casual setting, however, and some noise is to be expected.

The food here is fantastic. Every dish we ordered was obviously carefully planned as every component of each item meshed well with the others. I started with a venison tartare, which was paired with a pea-shoot salad and quail egg. This was fantastic, and the texture of the meat was contrasted nicely against the mound of crisp shaved root vegetables on top. The main courses that followed for my group were equally complex and the presentation was delicate. One or two in my party were surprised at the dainty portion sizes, however the quality of the food and its reasonable price point suggested that their expectations may have been better suited to Earl’s. I certainly left feeling full - not stuffed- and satisfied. This is absolutely a restaurant I intend to revisit.
